Multiplying fractions is the operation of combining two or more fractions into a single fraction that represents a part of a part. Unlike adding or subtracting fractions, it does not require a common denominator, which makes it one of the most straightforward operations you can do with fractions. You simply multiply the numerators together to get the new numerator, and multiply the denominators together to get the new denominator. A helpful shortcut is to cancel common factors before multiplying, so the result comes out already simplified. Taking a fraction of a fraction always makes the value smaller when both are proper fractions, because you are keeping only a portion of a portion. The word "of" is the everyday clue for this operation, as in finding two thirds of a half. It shows up constantly in real life, from scaling a recipe down or up, to calculating discounts, probabilities and proportions.
