Mathematic power of fraction

The power of a quotient is what you get when a fraction, or any division of two numbers, is raised to an exponent. The exponent tells you how many times the whole fraction is multiplied by itself. A key property is that you can raise the numerator and the denominator to that exponent separately, and the two forms always give the same result. This works because multiplying identical fractions simply multiplies all the tops together and all the bottoms together. The rule holds for positive, negative, and zero exponents, and a negative exponent conveniently flips the fraction upside down before the power is applied. It is one of the basic laws of exponents, sitting alongside the rules for products and powers of powers.

This idea shows up everywhere you work with ratios that grow or shrink repeatedly, such as compound interest, probability, scientific notation, and scaling in geometry. Being able to split a power across a fraction often makes an expression far easier to simplify by hand, since you can reduce the top and bottom independently. Mastering it is an essential step before tackling algebra, roots, and more advanced work with functions.
